A severe "learning disability" has not deterred a Huddersfield man from gaining
a degree.
David
Barraclough, of Almondbury, graduated with a 2:2 degree in geology from Derby
University.
Twenty-four-year-old
David's accomplishment is even more remarkable considering staff who taught him
described his dyslexia as the worst they had ever encountered.
David
said he enjoyed his time at University and is thrilled with his achievement.
He
said: "I had difficulty with reading and writing at school through dyslexia, so
to have been able to study for three years at this level and graduate is really
good."
To
aid him in his learning, David was given a printer, scanner and special computer
software.
He
added: "I have had hurdles to overcome on my course as a result of the dyslexia.
One
of the major problems was word and spelling recognition. However the support from
everyone and the approach to lecturing has been brilliant."
David
hopes his degree will help him get a job in the field of civil engineering.
Dr
Andrew Johnson, who works in the Division of Earth Systems Science at the University
of Derby said: "David's achievement's have been a major success in light of his
very severe disability."
