Dyslexia
and taking notes.
|
As
a student with dyslexia at college or university, you may have trouble
with note-taking. Draw a line down a sheet of paper, with one-third of the page
on the left and two-thirds of the page on the right.
Write
the main idea of each paragraph on the left side. List details on
the right side of the page.
The
two-column note-taking method visually separates information into main ideas and
details. More.
Dyslexia
and concentration.
|
The
main barriers to concentrating are boredom, anxiety and day-dreaming. To improve
our concentration skills we need to counteract these barriers. Set
aside a place for study and study only. Find
a specific place that you can use for studying (for example, the campus libraries,
vacant classrooms, quiet areas in the student center, your bedroom at home, etc.)

Dyslexia
and time management. | Many
students with dyslexia find it difficult to be well organized, and need
some kinds of techniques to help. When working, try to vary your tasks: half an
hour's writing might be followed by a change of activity - some work that involves
moving around or telephoning people. Use
an organizer. This
continuous diary will help you keep up to date with assignment and essay deadlines,
exams and appointments. You will also have your telephone numbers all in one place. Many
people keep a 'To do' list in their organizer. More.

Use
colors
to make it easier to remember which files are which. Put colored
stickers on trays, drawers, boxes and files.
Red often stands for 'Danger', so this color
could be used for things which are really important. Green
stands for 'Go', so this could be used for things which need to go out today.
And so on. Use your personal connections with colors, like using your favorite
color for jobs you enjoy.

Exam
techniques for a student with dyslexia.
Make
sure to attend the final few classes. The teacher will probably stress the material
which is most important. Tips may be given about what to study. Find
out what will be covered in the exam (e.g. the whole term, only since the last
test, only certain chapters).
Find
out what format will be used (essay type questions, short answer, multiple choice,

Reading
a difficult book.
| |
The
reading demands on a student with dyslexia can be considerable. The technique
of skimming may help. You will never get from skimming what reading and
study can give you, but it is a very practical way of dealing with the mass of
books available to you.
By
skimming you can get, often with surprising accuracy, a general sense of the contents
of a book. More.
Study
and exam accommodations.
|
You will need to obtain some
evidence of your dyslexia, usually in the form of an assessment report
from a psychologist. In some countries (e.g. the UK) this will be paid for by
the university (via the local education authority), but in many countries (like
the US), unfortunately, you will be expected to fund this yourself.

Scholarships
and grants for dyslexic students.
|
Scholarship
Programs - Scholarships for Students
with Disabilities. Students
with dyslexia at a UK university can apply for a Disabled Student's Allowance
which can help towards buying equipment such as a tape recorder and cassettes
for recording lectures, a laptop, an electronic spellchecker or the cost of photocopying.
The 2003-4 equipment allowance can be up to £4,460 and is a one-off
payment. A general allowance can be up to £1,490 per year. A non-medical helper's
allowance, which could cover salary costs for a reader who records text for the
student to hear or a note taker or typist, can be up to £11,280 per year. Part-time
students, studying at least 50 per cent of a full-time course leading to a degree
and post-graduate students are now also eligible for this allowance, up to a maximum
of £8,465. Details.

| Draw
a 'Mind Map'. Begin
your diagram with a circle in the middle of a sheet of paper. Inside the shape
or on the line, write the name of your topic. From your circle, draw three or
four lines out into the page. Be sure to spread them out. More.

Dyslexia
- student support.
|
Some
students with dyslexia
are nervous about approaching their tutors. Your tutor is paid to teach and support
you, and it can be helpful to go and see them.
Let
them know that you are dyslexic, so that they are aware of any particular difficulties
in connection with their subject. They may be able to put you in touch with any
special facilities that exist in your college or university. More.
|
Dyslexia
- giving presentations.
|
Use
cards - If called upon to give a presentation, break up your talk into short
pieces which can each be summarized on a card the size of a postcard.
Hold
these cards in your hands as you talk, and use them to provide cues for each of
the steps in your talk. Pick
out the key words on each card and write them in red or highlight them.
